everybody shouting about?
The new
Health Saving Accounts
(HSA) are creating quite a bit of excitement. In his State of the
Union address, the President said that HSAs should play a greater role
in covering the medical cost of ordinary American. The Chairman of the
Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, told the House Financial Services
Committee that Congress must tackle rising health care costs, which he
said are keeping insurance premiums high, forcing employers to cut
plans or increase the amount employees must pay, hampering the
economy.
So
what is an HSA?
Health
Savings Accounts (HSA) were authorized by the same 2003 law that
created the Medicare prescription drug benefit. Funds placed in such
accounts are federally tax deductible and, as long as they’re used for
medical expenses, remain tax-free. Balances remaining from one year
rollover to the next. HSAs are coupled with high deductible insurance
plans. Deductibles must be at least $1,050 for self-only coverage and
$2,100 for family coverage. The idea behind the health saving accounts
is that consumers will pay for only the services that they use, and
not fall into the use it or lose it insurance premium trap.
